Roseanne the tv show portrayed a working-class family living in fictional Lanford, Illinois. The major theme was the constant stuggles to get by on a limited income, and was ground-breaking at the time for its honest depiction of family life. Roseanne tackled difficult subjects like sex, first periods, poverty, alcoholism and narcotics, obesity, spousal abuse, and homosexuality in a way that had not been seen before on TV.
Roseanne starred the comedienne Roseanne Barr, and her character on the show had the same persona as her earlier standup work. The show was wildly popular from the start, and the first 6 seasons were all spent in the top 5 of the Nielsen ratings. By the mid-90's however (the show ran from 1988 till 1997) there were problems backstage, relating to Roseanne Barr. Constant turnover of writers and producers saw a sharp drop in ratings from the 7th season. In the final season, the show completely departed the original storyline, and fell out of the top thirty.
